The National Study of Student Engagement (NSSE)
The data that resulted from Auburn’s participation in this survey led to the formation of Writing Initiative Task
comprehensive report of Auburn student responses is available from the Office of Institutional
Research and Assessment.
Colleges Studying Writing Consortium (CSWC)
In 2010, Auburn students were asked 27 questions in the NSSE survey that focused on specific writing
practices. The full report is available from the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment and can
be viewed at this link.
The Office of University Writing undertook a longitudinal study of the impact of curricular change on
faculty attitudes toward writing and the attention they give to writing in upper level division courses
beginning in 2010. The goal of the study is to add important details to the general information available
from surveys like National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and the Consortium of Colleges Studying
Writing (CCSW). Because the study is interested in how the teaching of writing changes over time as the result
of the Writing Initiative, it is important for us to collect writing assignments from as many different courses
as possible, recruit and interview case study faculty members from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds, observe
courses from a wide-range of departments, and collect data in the form of writing samples, interviews, focus
groups, and survey results from students who are involved in courses with the case study faculty members.
In addition, we are looking at this study in connection with other initiatives happening at Auburn University,
such as faculty development workshops, on-line teaching resources, and the ePortfolio Project. If you are
interested in contributing to this study, please contact us at OUWRESH@auburn.edu.
