Fall 2011 Common Book Writing Contest Winners
The winners of the second annual Common Book Writing Contest were recognized at Convocation on Tuesday,
August 16, 2011. First place was awarded to Matthew Pollock, an English and Spanish major from Orange Beach
Florida, who wrote a science fiction short story that mirrored the themes and situations of Kidder’s book. Second
place went to Business Administration major Adriana Lee from Syracuse NY, who wrote a poem focused on “perspective.”
Robyn Greene a Communication major from Chattanooga Tennessee captured third place. She wrote a personal response
to a quote from the book.
The contest was open to all incoming first-year students. Entrants were asked to submit a written response to
this year’s Common Book, Mountains Beyond Mountains, by Tracy Kidder, using any genre they wished. The submissions
were judged by a panel of faculty, alumni and students. The competition is sponsored by Auburn Connects! and the
Office of University Writing.
“The Common Book writing contest gives our students a platform to showcase the very unique and personal lessons
they derived from reading Mountains Beyond Mountains,” said Auburn University Interim President Timothy Boosinger.
“The goal of any academic endeavor is to see our students take what they’ve learned and put it into action, and we
can see that our essay winners have an inherent desire to contribute their own ideas to solving the many global
issues our society faces. By participating in the writing contest, these students have demonstrated their ability
to become not only great students academically, but great students socially and personally also.”
The three winners were given gift cards to the Auburn University Bookstore. They will also be participating
in Common Book events throughout the semester, including the opportunity to dine with Kidder when he visits Auburn
later this year.
